A Spooktacular History
Don’s Costume & Make Up Shop has been a Calgary institution for more than 75 years. Founded in 1949 by Don Spicer as Don’s Hobby Shop, it began with crafts, model trains, and magic sets before expanding into formal wear rentals. That shift sparked the addition of Santa suits and, ultimately, the costumes and theatrical makeup that made Don’s a household name.
In 2003, Scott Bennie—whose father had been the shop’s accountant for over 30 years—purchased the business. The following year, Don’s moved from its longtime downtown location to a much larger space in Crescent Heights. The expansion gave the store room to grow and flourish, transforming it into a year-round destination not only for Halloween and cosplay fans, but also for theatre companies and film productions seeking costumes, props, and professional-grade makeup.
